Ruma National Park
Looking for a destination that feels like a well-kept secret? Ruma National Park is it. Known as the "Last Retreat of the Roan Antelope," this park offers a raw, undisturbed safari experience in the heart of Homa Bay County. At Mnaha Wild Adventures, we specialize in taking you off the beaten path to witness the rare wildlife and stunning landscapes of the Lake Victoria circuit.
Where is Ruma National Park Located?:
Situated in the Lambwe Valley, Ruma is an "island" of wilderness. It is perfect for travelers starting from Kisumu.
- Distance from Kisumu: Approximately 140 km.
- Drive Time: Expect a 3 to 4-hour drive from Kisumu town.
The Best Route from Kisumu (Mnaha Recommended): For the most scenic drive and better roads, follow the Kendu Bay – Homa Bay route:
-
Kisumu to Katito Junction: Head south out of the city.
-
Katito to Kendu Bay: Turn right at the junction and enjoy the descent toward the lake.
-
Homa Bay Town: Pass through the town, keeping an eye out for the massive Asego Hill.
-
Kamato Gate: This is the main entrance. Follow the tarmac toward Rodi Kopany to branch off to the park.
- The Rare Roan Antelope: Ruma is the only place in Kenya where you can find these majestic, horse-like antelopes.
- Rhino Sanctuary: It is a vital refuge for endangered Black Rhinos.
- The "Gor Mahia" Connection: The park is named after the legendary powerful wizard, Gor Mahia, who lived on a hill that forms part of the Kanyamwa Escarpment.
Most guides suggest the dry season, but Mnaha Wild Adventures recommends the wet season (April–June and Oct–Dec).
Why?: The park turns a vibrant, lush emerald green. The animals, especially the antelopes and rhinos, are out grazing on the fresh grass rather than hiding in the thickets. It is the absolute best time for wildlife photography.
